Ohio FAQ’s

Individuals who are 18 years of age or older and who have failed their first attempt at the Ohio maneuverability or road test portion of the driving test are eligible. There is no maximum age.

The course is required for individuals who fail their first attempt at the maneuverability or road test. Completing an Abbreviated Adult program, which includes both the online course and behind-the-wheel instruction, is mandatory to be eligible to attempt the road test for a second time.

The Combo Program includes a 4-hour state-approved online course and 4 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an expert instructor. To receive a Certificate of Completion, students must achieve a passing grade of 75% or greater on the final exam.

Individuals are permitted 90 days to complete the 4-hour online course.

After successfully completing both the online course and the behind-the-wheel training, you will receive a Certificate of Completion (emailed and uploaded to the student portal within a maximum of 2 business days). You should not schedule your road test until after this certificate is received. The course fulfills the requirement necessary to attempt your road test for a second time.

The full Ohio Class D Driver Education course, which includes 24 hours of classroom/online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training, is mandatory for:
Ohio Residents Ages 18–20: All individuals in this age group applying for their first driver's license (effective September 30, 2025). Limited Term License Applicants (18+): All adults who are temporary residents applying for a non-renewable, non-transferrable license.

  • The Class D Driver Education course is not required by the state of Ohio if you are age 21 or older.
  • If you are 21 or older and applying for your first license, you can generally proceed straight to the driving test after obtaining your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC). However, if you fail that initial driving test, you are then required to complete the shorter, remedial Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before you are eligible to attempt the test again.

  • The online portion of the Class D Driver Education program requires 24 hours of instruction, which students can complete at their own pace over a maximum period of 180 days.
  • Students are limited to completing a maximum of 4 hours of online instruction per day. Additionally, a mandatory 10-minute break must be taken after every two hours of continuous online learning.
  • To successfully finish the course, students must pass the final written exam with a score of 75% or greater.
